About This Seed
Seeds are extremely tiny, teardrop-shaped to oval, black or dark brown, measuring about 1 to 2 millimeters in length with a smooth, shiny surface. The resulting plant is a climbing, epiphytic vine cactus with segmented, fleshy, triangular stems bearing aerial roots, large nocturnal fragrant white flowers, and striking vibrant pink or red edible fruits with green scales.
Growing Information
Growing Season
Spring and Summer; start indoors or direct sow in warm climates. Frost intolerant, plant after all danger of frost has passed.
Germination
Germinates in 7 to 14 days at optimal soil temperatures between 70°F and 85°F. High germination rate. Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface as they require light to germinate effectively. No special pre-treatment required.
Planting Instructions
Plant very shallow, about 1/8 inch deep, pressing gently into well-draining cactus/succulent mix or seed-starting soil. Space seeds 1 to 2 inches apart if in containers. Prefers sandy, well-draining soil with an optimal pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Requires full sun to partial shade (6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily). Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established, but requires consistent moisture during fruiting.
