About This Seed
A winged fruit known as a samara. The seed is enclosed in a nutlet at the base with a fibrous, papery wing extend outwards. The matured plant is a medium to large deciduous tree with trilobed leaves, reddish stems, and vibrant red/orange fall foliage.

Spring or Fall; seeds mature in late spring and are often direct-sown naturally by wind.
Germination
7 to 14 days for spring-maturing species. Requires moist, mineral-rich soil. Some species require cold stratification for 90 days, but Red Maple can germinate immediately after falling.
Planting Instructions
Plant 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Space several feet apart if in a nursery bed. Prefers moist, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5) and rich organic matter.
