Growing Information

Growing Season

Plant in spring after scarification; best started in nursery beds or deep containers

Germination

14-30 days. Requires scarification (boiling water soak or mechanical nicking) due to hard seed coat. Optimal soil temp 20-30°C (68-86°F). High germination rate after treatment.

Planting Instructions

Depth: 1 inch. Spacing: 10-15 feet for groves, 30+ feet for specimens. Prefers deep, moist, fertile loams but is highly adaptable. pH 6.0-8.0.

Sunlight & Water Needs

Full sun. Moderate water; high drought tolerance once established. Tolerates urban pollution and occasional flooding.

Companion Plants

Grows well with grass (lawns) due to light shade; avoid planting near structures if using the thorny wild variety.

Special Characteristics

Fixes nitrogen (though lack of nodules is debated), salt tolerant, highly drought resistant, provides dappled shade, attracts pollinators with fragrant flowers.
