Prickly Pear Cactus Seed
Opuntia ficus-indica • Cactaceae

🌱 Seed Category
Succulent
🌍 Origin Region
Native to the Americas, specifically Mexico, and widely naturalized in arid and semi-arid regions globally.
📅 Days to Maturity
Prickly pear grown from seed can take 3 to 4 years to reach flowering and fruiting maturity.
🌡️ Hardiness Zones
Thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 11, tolerating brief drops to 10°F (-12°C) depending on the specific species.
About This Seed
Seeds are typically hard, flat, disc-shaped or irregular, light tan to whitish, and approximately 3 to 5 mm in diameter with a hard stony seed coat. The resulting plant is a large, shrubby or arborescent cactus featuring flattened, fleshy pad segments (cladodes) with clusters of spines and tiny hair-like glochids, producing showy yellow or orange flowers followed by edible fleshy oval fruits known as tunas.
Growing Information
Growing Season
Spring or early summer. Start indoors or direct sow in warm climates. Tender to frost until established.
Germination
Germination takes 14 to 30 days at an optimal soil temperature of 70-85°F (21-29°C). Germination rate is moderate. Light is helpful for germination. Mild scarification (such as gently rubbing with sandpaper) can improve germination speed.
Planting Instructions
Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining sandy loam or cactus potting mix. Space seeds 2 to 3 inches apart. Requires porous, highly permeable soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
Sunlight & Water Needs
Requires full sun (6-8+ hours of direct sunlight daily). Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established and dislikes wet, soggy soil.
Companion Plants
Pairs well with other arid-adapted succulents, agave, yuccas, and desert herbs like lavender and rosemary. Avoid heavy-water plants.
Special Characteristics
Exceptional heat and drought tolerance, deer resistant, highly attractive to pollinators when in bloom, edible pads and fruits rich in antioxidants.
