About This Seed
The image shows an immature seed ball or cluster of achenes. When ripe, these are brown, globose heads containing many small, hairy, winged achenes. The tree is a massive deciduous hardwood with mottled peeling 'camouflage' bark, large maple-like leaves, and can reach heights of 70-100 feet.

Germination
Requires 60-90 days of cold, moist stratification at 34-41°F. Germination takes 14-30 days at 70-85°F. Seeds need light to germinate; surface sow and do not cover.
Planting Instructions
Surface sow on moist, well-draining seed starting mix. Space seedlings 10 feet apart for nursery growth, or 30-50 feet for permanent landscaping. Prefers rich, moist alluvial soils with pH 4.5 to 7.5.
